Dear ACA Member, I am writing to share with you the results of a new national study demonstrating the ongoing value of the third-party debt collection industry to the U.S. economy. It reveals that our industry returned $40 billion in 2007 to businesses that extend consumers credit, helping keep prices lower and saving the average American household $354. The report, titled "Value of Third-Party Debt Collection to the U.S. Economy in 2007: Survey and Analysis," was commissioned by ACA International, authored by global advisory firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and based on a national survey of third-party debt collection firms. You can view the entire report and its executive summary, along with our official press release, by clicking on this link: http://www.acainternational.org/pwc. This study is a follow-up to the groundbreaking 2005 study of the same name that was also commissioned by ACA International and conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The 2007 findings further validate what that initial study reported and what you and your fellow ACA members have long known: Debt collection reduces the risk of loss for business; permits greater business expansion; makes it possible for healthcare providers to maintain access to care in their communities; and allows for the privilege and convenience of credit as a positive financial tool for American consumers. The new findings also reveal the continued growth of the debt collection industry and its positive impact on the American economy, directly and indirectly supporting an estimated 420,000 American jobs with a payroll of $15.9 billion in 2007. The study also shows that of the estimated $152.5 billion in bad debt charged off by private businesses in 2007, debt collectors were able to return $40.4 billion, representing a 20.9 percent reduction in private sector bad debt. We will be launching a multi-faceted public relations campaign in the coming days aimed at securing positive stories in the print, broadcast and online media regarding the results of this study. We thank you for all your hard work on behalf of this industry and most of all for letting myself and the staff of ACA International strive to meet your needs and help you better this industry. For any additional questions or information about the study and our public relations planning, please feel free to contact ACA International's Public Relations Director, John Nemo, at 952-928-8000, ext. 124, or nemo@acainternational.org.
